Chapters 15, 16, & 17

Guess who's back? Sophie and she's ready to help! After David is beaten and knocked unconscious, Sophie comes to help him escape. Sophie also learns about David's telepathy, and is curious, but keeps his secret. She leads him to her cave, and tells him to stay there while she goes to find Rosalind and Petra. But Sophie is worried that the spider man will choose Rosalind over her, only because Rosalind can have children. She finds Petra and Rosalind, and brings them to her cave also. Rachel tells Michael that Mark might be dead, so she's all alone and very scared. I think that he did die, but not from torture or someone thinking he was telepathic. I think he would have told his friends if he were suspected. The Sealand people are on their way, but very far off. I think they'll show up just in time, but barely.
In chapter 16, Sophie gets mad at Rosalind for taking the spider man away from her. Next, we find David being woken by Michael. He tells David that the search party is planning to attack soon, and the Sealanders will be another eight and a half hours. The Fringes think that David rescued Rosalind and Petra, killed the Albino guard, and sent a search after him. But it soon died down with a battle starting. Then, David has the issue of his father. Was he in the army against him, or not? Should he kill his father, or spare him? His father was always persistent about destroying deviants, no matter who they were. I think that he is in the army. The Sealand lady gives this giant speech about how he should react. She said not to bother about David's father because he doesn't understand. Right now, their focus was to survive. Sophie left to find out what was going on. She was gone for an hour, but finally returned. When she did, the spider man was at the bottom of the ladder, calling for Sophie. Luckily, he didn't come up, nor did he suspect her. After this, the battle had begun. I was starting to think the Sealanders weren't coming, when all of a sudden; there was some sort of mist descending from the sky. Along with the descending mist, there were these cobweb-like things falling from the sky. They are sticky, and cover everything.
They slowly expand and suffocate all living things. The Sealand lady comes in just in time to spray David, Rosalind, Petra, and Michael. The Sealand lady is beautifully airbrushed, and looks perfect. She brings the 4 to her "fish thing", or a helicopter, and gets ready to go. But Michael says there is one other, Rachel. He asks if they can go get her, but there isn't enough fuel to go there, make a landing, and go back with an extra person. So Michael stays behind to get Rachel, and they would find a way to get to Sealand. Finally, after 17 chapters, the prediction we've been making since chapter 1: David and the remaining telepathic people make it to David's dream land. Though it never says it in the book, I think that Rachel and Michael will make it to Sealand and everyone there will live much more comfortably. Sometimes I wondered if it was too good to be true, since the Sealanders killed all those people in the Fringes. But then I thought, nah. I like good endings, might as well keep it good.

Chapters 13 & 14

Arrows flying, horses running; chapter 13 is definitely one of the most exciting. David, Rosalind and Petra finally meet with a search party, and overtake them, running into the woods. When they finally find a place to rest, they eat while Petra talks with her friend from Zealand. She wants to talk with David and Rosalind, but they can't hear her. They both fall asleep while Petra stays up to speak with her Zealand friend. Petra wakes David up to say that Michael is trying to speak with them. Sally and Katherine are thought to be dead, as there is no communication with them the search party was coming after them, so they got moving. Suddenly, a gun shot fired, and they horses bolted. There was no stopping them now. The horses eventually slowed but then... BAM! Something hit David in the head.
We start this chapter with David being awakened by Rosalind and Petra. They were captured by the Fringes. When they met the Fringes, they were nothing like the stories they'd heard. They go to see the leader, the spider man. He was the one who looked exactly like David's Dad. It turns out he was Joseph Strorm's brother. Just before, Michael tells them 100 men are coming after them. The spider man then gets all weird, wants to rape Rosalind, gets punched by David, and then leaves for battle before he gets to Rosalind. David is taken out, beaten, and left unconscious.
I think that later on, David will rescue Rosalind and Petra. Then, he will get the other Telepaths and leave for Zealand. I think Zealand isn't actually called Sealand as they all think, but is actually New Zealand. It would make sense, since David lives in Labrador, just north of Quebec.
After all this bad news for David, one good thing happens later on in chapter 15....

Chapters 11 & 12

With the deviations rates lowering, the town was happier, and things are going great. But of course, Petra gets in trouble; again! She does that telepathic control thing, and every other telepathic person comes rushing to her aid. Her horse is dead, she isn't injured, but David comes just in time to kill the beast that attacked her. Then all the others come, at intervals, and another man, too. They explained the situation without giving to much information, but he is still suspicious. Afterwards, David teaches Petra the ways of telepathy. She's working on it, but each time she tries, it’s like a giant explosion. The others are startled and a bit annoyed, but patient as she learns. Then, after many discussions, Uncle Axel reveals he murdered Alan because Anne revealed herself and the rest to him.
That was chapter 11. Chapter 12 is where the story really starts to pick up. After David falls asleep, Petra comes in his room to wake him. The others tell him they have finally been discovered, and Sally and Katherine have been taken captive. So David and Petra run away into the woods to find Rosalind. The run for the fringes, while Sally and Katherine are tortured. Michael joins a search party to deceive them, but fails. They found David, Petra, and Rosalind. I think that they will fight and David will win. But also in this chapter, Petra speaks with a telepathic person from a place called Zealand which is exactly what David's dream in the beginning was of. I think instead of the Fringes, after the defeat the search party, they will head for Zealand with Uncle Axel. It looks as if there is hope of flying cars, and cities by large bays after all.

Chapters 9 & 10

In chapter 9, lots of things happened. While David was working in the fields, all of a sudden, there was a thought-shape that was like a command. He did not what he was doing, but he instantly dropped everything and ran towards it. He went thought the forest and dove into a river where he found Petra. She was drowning, but just in time, he had saved her. Rosalind had heard it, too, and met with David at the river. Everyone, afterward, had questioned the two how they knew. They lied saying that she was screaming really loudly. That night, David had the same dream about Sophie being killed, except it was Petra instead of Sophie. The next day, the gang tried to send thought-shapes to Petra, but nothing happened. She was able to send commands, but not regular thought shapes. Twenty years later, the crops are terrible and all that jazz, and they burn lots of crops, animals, and the like. After David speaks with a creepy old man about the matter, Anne announces she was getting married.
Anne was getting married to the worst option possible: Alan, the blacksmith’s son. As a recap, he was the boy who blabbed about Sophie. She wouldn’t listen to the others’ advice and ignored them. As a result, she could no longer hear thought shapes. She married Alan and hey lived pretty happily with no slips. Later on, Alan is killed by an arrow. Anne is devastated and won’t talk to anyone. She suspects her telepathic friends, and hangs herself at one month pregnant. I think that Uncle Axel killed Alan. This is because he advises David to get rid of Anne, but David refused. Uncle Axel knew this would be a problem and tries to influence him. If there was a slip, they would all be dead. So he just killed Alan instead. The last sentence of this chapter is a bit freaky. Michael says, “One of us has been found not strong enough”
I think someone has finally found out…

Chapters 7 & 8

In these next two chapters, David learns about the way people act around babies, or the subject of them. His sister, Petra, was born to them. Funny thing is, the family or friends couldn't talk about the mother being pregnant, giving birth, or anything until the inspector came and approved the child as being normal. As David and his family waited, his father grew angrier and angrier. When the inspector finally came after days of waiting, he leisurely took his time in walking to the house, getting into the baby's room, and approving the child. While he did this, David's father was getting pretty red in the face. In the end, Petra was approved and David had a new sister. A few days later, Aunt Harriet stopped for a visit to see the new born baby. Her own baby had also been born a few days before. While his aunt and his mother compare and converse secretly, David's aunt shows her baby; it was a mutant. Her plan was to switch her baby with Petra, get it approved, and then switch them back. This was her third child that turned out to be a mutant, and her husband would leave her if it wasn't approved. Of course both of Dave's parents refused, and sent her away. The next day, they were told Aunt Harriet's body was found in a river.
In chapter 8, not much happens. David and his family pray for Aunt Harriet, David has nightmares about her and the baby in the river. Uncle Axel, noticing David's mopping, talks with him about mutants and his telepathy. They discuss what happened to the boy who disappeared, and the importance of keeping his gift a secret.
In these chapters, I think that how they treat babies is so cruel. It's like the holocaust, it's awful. I also think that is why Aunt Harriet died (or committed suicide). I also think that David is thinking seriously now of running away, with his telepathic group, to the Fringes or beyond. All the things he's been taught are being challenged by his uncle, and its deeply affecting him. After the whole baby incident, David will never be the same.

Chapter 5 & 6

In these next few chapters, there is so much information and conclusions to draw that I'm afraid my entry today will be really long. In chapter five, David and Sophie go to a river to catch some "shrimp things". Sophie, looking enviously at David, decided to take off her shoes and hop in the river with him. While she was trying to catch some unsuccessfully, she mistakenly put her guard down and a boy named Alan appears. She fleas, but left her footprint on a stone. Sophie is finally found out. And everything goes down from there. The pair, once Alan is unconscious, run to Sophie's home. After telling her parents everything, they leave. David is told to stay in the house till morning, and obeys. When he returns, Alan has told everything to the town, and David is in for it. He was also told to not say anything of the Wender's. Assuming he was beaten by his father, he gave the whole story away.

In chapter six, David has some frightening dreams about Sophie. In the morning he is interrogated by his father and the inspector. Afterwards he decides he will run away, and goes to Uncle Axel for counsel. Uncle Axel, in return gives David a detailed description of the lands further from Labrador and Newf. He also advises David not to run away till he was old enough.

Many predictions can be made from the last two chapters. One being that David lives in Labrador, just near the border of Quebec. Labrador isn't cold anymore because of Global Warming. The Northern lands are so weird because the plants have overgrown and aren't like the ones in Labrador. The Fringes live in a drought, in Quebec. After that comes the Black lands. These are in the New Brunswick area. In the First World War, the Nova Scotian area was devastated by an explosion and hit with a blizzard. During the 30's, New Brunswick was hit with a large earthquake, and then also afterwards a blizzard. So I think it’s either still black from those events, or a nuclear war, or a volcano formed. I tend to think volcano, since there's a faint glowing in the distance. Further south, you can find the USA where people are isolated so they kind of became like tribes and believe a whole bunch of weird things. The American Dream, eh? Ya, right... the further south you get, the more black people you find, so I thought it might be Mexico or something. There was also an albino tribe, a hairless tribe, and tribes that think some weird things about deviations. And then they hit the weeds. I think they're weeds just before a coral reef, so they were fortunate to hit the weeds first. If you go east, you either find unending sea, or the country where man-eating-women rule. I think they just are crossing the Atlantic Ocean, and when they find the country of man-eating-women, they found England, but were half mad when they got there. And other than that, that is all that is known of the wide world.

Chapters 3 & 4

In these chapters of the Chrysalids, Dave is quickly showing us his everyday life of school, lunch, visiting Sophie and so on. In their adventures, they go to see an old steam engine. They discuss how the Old People had better engines, and that they could even fly. I think that the Old People lived in a futuristic society with hover cars, and planes. The people in these times just perceived it as flying, but the gossip about them might have changed the whole story. Later on, when Dave goes home, notices I got a splinter. He takes it out and roughly bandages it. When his mother notices, she scolds him and repairs it. David then says, "I could have managed it if I'd had another hand." and His father freaks out. They all pray for him, and then is sent to his room to pray alone. He had blasphemed. David is starting to understand the seriousness of the promise he made to Mrs. Wender, Sophie's mom. I think because of this event, David will seek justice for people like Sophie.

In chapter four, we, and Uncle Axel, discover that David and his half cousin Rosalind have the special ability to communicate through telepathy. The two and a group of others promise to keep their abilities secret. This will come in handy, as some will say they're mutants if they found out. I think because of this, they will run away together with David to find the city. In the next scene, the Fringes attack the civilization. And of course, they lose and their chiefs are taken captive. While they're paraded through the district, they stop at David's house. To Dave's surprise the one man looks exactly like his father except messier and longer. I think this means that there is a mutant of everyone living in the Fringes land. The Fringes are an exact copy of Waknuk and all the other civilized places, except wilder. The two "twins" will have much in common, but I think the Fringe version will be a lot more kind, compassionate, and loving than the religious, whitewashed hypocrites of Waknuk. I think they'll help each other out in the end, humanize the "civilized" people and educate the Fringes.
